JI calls for joint session of parliament
Staff Report
LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Secretary General Syed Munawar Hassan urged the government to summon a joint session of the parliament to make a rehabilitation plan for the October 8 earthquake affected areas.
The government should cooperate with people for relief and rehabilitation operations and not wait for foreign help, he said while talking to reporters at a tea reception hosted by the Lahore Media Forum on Tuesday, adding that at least $10 to 12 billion were required for rehabilitating the affected areas. He said that the United Nations had asked the international community to help the victims, but the matter was not given serious attention.
He said that according to data available with the JI, more than 200,000 people had died in the earthquake, 1.5 million were injured and around 5 million were left without shelter.
Regarding the arrival of NATO forces, he said the government should let the parliament know that under what circumstances the forces were called.
Munawar expressed concern about the NATO forces and said that the presence of these forces was not a good sign.
